" BTS j-hope, perform in Hanbok from the 18th century". Great job, designer Cho Young-ki.
2018 MMA BTS Hanbok stage costume design.
BTS j-hope was highly praised for his perfect performance in harmony with hanbok.
The Korean traditional music broadcasting radio program "I'm Kim Kyung-ran of the Cultural Era" invited Cho Young-ki, a hanbok designer, to conduct an interview on the 21st of last month under the theme of "The Living Clothes, on the 21st of last month. Designer Cho Young-ki is a representative designer of Cheonmubong Shinhan Bok and an important intangible cultural property No. 107 Nubijang Training Scholarship student, making hanbok applicable to modern times through research on traditional hanbok production methods.
DJ Kim Kyung-ran, who was in charge of hosting, said, "If you look at BTS's stage, you can see what Cheonmubong's hanbok looks like," referring to wearing designer Cho Young-ki's work when BTS performed the song "IDOL" at the 2018 Melon Music Awards (MMA).
At that time, the designer produced costumes and props for J-Hope's Samgumu, Jimin's fan dance, 11 backup dancers, Seokjin, Suga, and 70 backup dancers on the main stage.
Designer Cho Young-ki described J-Hope's costume in detail. "J-Hope performed his solo Samgumu performance, and he came out wearing the 'so-chang-ui' I designed." He introduced that he made the 18th century's "so-chang-ui" by reproducing it almost as it was."
Subsequently, "Sochangui is similar to Durumagi, but it is not blocked and has a deep gap on both sides. Therefore, it is good for dancing dynamically and can give the public a feeling of hanbok at a glance. The material was also made of traditional gold and woven ends, and it was made of single layers for dance, he said.
DJ Kim Kyung-ran mentioned the movement of the line of Hanbok. In response, designer Cho Young-ki said, "As j-hope said, the seat that moves together every time j-hope moves was really fascinatingly beautiful. "It harmonized beautifully with the sound of Samgumu drum," he said.
At that time, j-hope appeared barefoot wearing a shirt and pants in designer Cho Young-ki's hanbok and performed hip-hop dance among dozens of Samgumu performers, drawing enthusiastic cheers from fans around the world.
On the main stage that followed, he drew attention by wearing sneakers in the same outfit. Designer Cho Young-ki said, "It was really impressive that J-Hope danced dynamically with battalions, Norigae, and hanbok on top of his daily clothes." I imagined what it would have felt like if a dancer saw it in the 18th century, he said.
"It's hanbok, but it doesn't look like a folk outfit, and it naturally blends with modern clothes, so it fits well with the song, giving me a lot of impression. "It was such a great stage that it was hard to express in words," he said.
