Popularity of K-pop and K-drama in South Africa and Algeria.

One netizen said that Africa cannot be an exception as K-pop groups are holding concerts anywhere in the world, but replied that they are not receiving much attention yet because there are not many African K-pop fans compared to the United States and Europe.



In fact, the idol group "Argon" was scheduled to hold a concert in Algeria in 2019, but canceled the performance because there were not many ticket reservations.



According to U.S. media Ozzy, interest in the Korean Wave grew in Algeria in 2008. Korean dramas such as "Dae Jang Geum" and "My Name is Kim Sam Soon" received attention from the Algerian people, and singer Psy's "Gangnam Style" became a worldwide hit in 2012.



The soft power of K-pop was also affected by the lyrics of BTS (BTS) songs written on placards in the process of protesting against former Algerian President Abdelaz Bouteflika's fifth term challenge in 2019.



Algerian fans also celebrated BTS member V's 22nd birthday, and the fan club BTS Algeria Army produced balloons and billboards to commemorate BTS member Jimin's birthday.



In 2008, when Korean dramas were aired, the Korean Wave began to draw attention, said BTS Algerian fan Padhella Manar Mezmaz. "There are people who want to learn Korean to communicate with their favorite singers, but recently some people write that they can speak Korean."




The Korean Wave is also spreading its influence in South Africa. According to South African media News 24, Lindsay Katlego Setlema liked American singer Chris Brown because he was interested in dancing, but he changed his mind when he saw Taemin, a member of the K-pop group SHINee, in 2018.



Attending the "2018 Changwon K-pop World Festival" held in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa, he advanced to the final round and was finally able to show off his dance skills in Korea.



Setlema recalled, "I wasn't interested in Korea until I learned that Korea was treating the entertainment industry seriously," adding, "After watching Taemin, I started to pay attention to K-pop by looking for other videos."



Starting this year, K-drama will captivate African viewers. CJ ENM has joined hands with South African media company Multi-Choice Group to promote "Again" on tvN's African channel since March. Korean dramas such as Oh Hae-young, I-Land, and Signal began to air.



"Viewers will be able to see the lifestyle of Koreans through tvN channels," said Yolisa Fahele, CEO of General Entertainment Connected Video of Multi-Choice Group.
